Steve Altmaier, the KGFW-AM/FM News Director, is retiring at the end of November.  Steve is a radio and media legend in Central Nebraska.  Steve's calming voice and demeanor have been his trademark since his first day on New Year’s Eve 1974.  He has diligently served his community via the AM radio waves as an Announcer, Sports Play By Play announcer and News Director. Everybody knows him. He is on the Mt. Rushmore of Kearney radio to several generations of its residents.

Steve has interviewed, questioned and drawn out the answers our listeners want from Governors, Congressmen and Senators, State Legislators, and other state and local government officials.  Add to that visits from Non-Profit and business leaders plus countless regular citizens just there to pitch an upcoming event or cause on KGFW's legacy community program  "Talk Of The Town".

Before becoming the News Director at KGFW Steve served as "The voice of the Lopers" that is UNK and before that Kearney State College Athletics including Football, Men's and Women's Basketball, Baseball and Softball from the Fall of 1981 thru the Spring of 2005.  It is estimated he called over 2,500 UNK athletic events over his 24 years behind the mic for UNK. He was inducted into the UNK Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006 for his service to Loper Athletics.   Added to that Sports Play by Play tally are countless High School Football and Basketball games.  Chances are, if you played high school sports in the area in the 80’s, 90’s or early 2000’s, then Steve probably announced several of your games. For all of his work in Sports Steve was recognized in 2005 as the Nebraska Coaches Association Media Person of the Year.  Steve also spent time as the Associate News Director, and was part of "The Breakfast Flakes" the long running morning show on KGFW at times.

Steve’s other community involvement included six years on the Kearney Little League board, three as President, and six years on the Kearney Legion Baseball Board, including three as President.  Steve served on the UNK Athletic Hall of Fame Committee for over 10 years and coached numerous youth Baseball, Soccer and football teams along the way as well.

Steve’s last day at KGFW-AM/FM will be Wednesday, November 30th.  His final Talk of the town show will air from 9 till 11am that day and will include many listeners calling with their well wishes and expressions of thanks we are sure.  NRG Media invites people to stop by the Kearney studios that day between 11am and 1pm to pass along their best wishes in person and even have some cake.

We are sorry to see him go, but wish him and his family all the best in his retirement.  There is no other way to say it…Steve embodies what GREAT LOCAL RADIO should be in our communities!
