GUIDE ROCK — A 4.2 magnitude earthquake was reported six miles north northeast of Guide Rock on Sunday afternoon.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake had a shallow depth of 4.4 miles and occurred at 1:31 p.m.

Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. Guide Rock likely felt light shaking.

On Sept. 18, a 2.6 magnitude earthquake occurred near Cowles, only 20 minutes from Guide Rock.

According to the NSGS, areas east of the Rocky Mountains experience infrequent earthquakes.

Earthquakes east of the Rocky Mountains, although less frequent than in the West, are typically felt over a much broader region than earthquakes of similar magnitude in the west.
