KPS dedicating time capsule for 150th anniversary

May 5, 2023 | 3:21 PM

Kearney Public Schools will be dedicating a time capsule as part of KPS’s 150th Anniversary.

The event will be on Monday, May 8 at 5 p.m. at the historic Whittier building, now the Kearney Public Schools Administration Office.

The 150th Time Capsule will contain a tub of items from each school in the district from preschool through high school and then be buried inside a wall that was once an old closet in the Whittier building.

“This is the pinnacle of all time capsules,” said Jason Mundorf, KPS Superintendent. “Each of our schools packed a tote box full of memories and information about the 2022/2023 school year. We hope that the KPS students who open these 50 years from now will have a fun and interesting snapshot of our schools.”

The Whittier building is  Kearney’s oldest school building in use.  The original Whittier building, built in 1880, burnt down and was rebuilt in the same location in 1920.
