Friday's Sports Update
The Big Ten Conference announced the conference schedule for the 2014 football season yesterday. The schedule will consist of eight games for each of the Big Ten’s 14 teams, and will feature the debut of the East-West divisional alignment. Nebraska will open the 2014 Big Ten schedule at home against Illinois on Sept. 27th. In addition to Illinois, the Huskers will host West Division schools Purdue (Nov. 1st) and Minnesota (Nov. 22nd). Nebraska’s home cross-division opponent in 2014 will be Big Ten newcomer Rutgers, which visits Lincoln on Oct. 25th. The game will be Rutgers’ first-ever trip to Lincoln, and just the second all-time meeting between the schools. The Huskers’ Big Ten road schedule in 2014 includes games at West Division foes Northwestern (Oct. 18th), Wisconsin (Nov. 15th) and Iowa (Friday, Nov. 28th). The Huskers will play their cross-division road game in 2014 at Michigan State, traveling to East Lansing on Oct. 4th. The 2014 Big Ten Championship Game will be played at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis on Dec. 6th. In addition to the 2014 Big Ten schedule, Nebraska will play non-conference home games against Florida Atlantic (Aug. 30th), McNeese State (Sept. 6th) and Miami, Fla. (Sept. 20th). In non-conference play, Nebraska will travel to Fresno State on Sept. 13th. Other Schedule Notes --Nebraska’s only other matchup with Rutgers came in the 1920 season, when Nebraska posted a 28-0 victory at the Polo Grounds in New York City. --Purdue will make its first-ever trip to Lincoln in 2014. The teams have met just once previously (1958, West Lafayette), prior to this season’s game at Purdue. --Nebraska will open Big Ten play each of the next two years against Illinois. In addition to the Big Ten home opener in 2014, NU will open conference play against the Fighting Illini this fall, with the matchup on Oct. 5 in Lincoln. 2014 Nebraska Football Schedule, Aug. 30th Florida Atlantic The Nebraska baseball team squandered an early lead in a 7-5 loss to the Michigan Wolverines last night in game one of a three game series at Hawks Field in Lincoln. Game two of the three game set is tonight. You can hear the Huskers and Wolverines on 1340 AM KGFW starting at 6:04, first pitch is at 6:35. The Huskers close out the series, and the regular season, Saturday at noon. The Big Ten Tournament begins next week Wednesday in Minneapolis, Minnesota. For the second year in a row, UNK's Brian Wuest has made the Daktronics All-Central Region baseball team. After being voted to the second-team last spring, Wuest (Prosper, Texas) made the first-team this year as a utility player. By making the first-team, Wuest now moves on to the national ballot where he could earn All-American honors. As a junior, he was named a third-team All-American by the ABCA (American Baseball Coaches Association). Wuest (Prosper, Texas) started all 45 games for the Lopers this year, leading the team in nine offensive categories while ranking first in the MIAA in slugging percentage (.821) and RBI’s (64). The Nebraska softball team opens NCAA Regional play tonight in Lincoln. The Huskers, who are the 14th-national seed, are making their 21st NCAA Tournament appearance and are hosting an NCAA Regional for the fifth time since Bowlin Stadium opened in 2002. Tulsa and Stanford will open the regional at 4:00 this afternoon, with the 16th-ranked Huskers and Northern Iowa meeting at 7:00. The double-elimination tourney continues through Sunday. The Lincoln Regional is matched up with the Eugene Regional, hosted by the 3rd-national seed Oregon. NCAA Lincoln Regional Schedule Saturday, May 18 Sunday, May 19 Three Husker softball players have earned All-Midwest Region honors yesterday. Junior Tatum Edwards was named a first-team pitcher/utility selection, while freshman right-hander Emily Lockman was a first-team pitcher. Senior Brooke Thomason was a second-team outfielder. Nebraska’s three all-region selections are now eligible for NFCA All-America honors. The 2013 All-America first-, second- and third-teams will be announced on May 29th.
Girls Tennis, Today is the final day of the 2013 Girls Tennis State Tournaments. At the Class A Tourney at Tranquility Park in Omaha, Omaha Marian and Omaha Westside lead the team standings with 34 points. Kearney High and Grand Island are tied for 10th with 14 team points. In Class B at the Nebraska Tennis Center in Lincoln, Omaha Skutt leads the team standings with 36 points, with Grand Island Central Catholic in 2nd place with 30 points. Holdrege is tied for 4th with 26 points and Kearney Catholic is tied for 7th with 22 points. Other notes from Class B...Annie Allmand of Holdrege has advanced the the semifinals in #2 singles, and Kearney Catholic's #1 and #2 doubles teams have each advanced to today's semifinals. The Semifinals for both classes will begin at 9:00 this morning, with the Championship and Consolation matches starting at 1:00. Track & Field, The 2013 High School Track and Field State Championships begin today at Burke Stadium in Omaha. Classes A and C compete in session one at 9:00 this morning, Classes B and D compete in session two beginning at 3:30. Championship Saturday begins at 9:00 with a Special Olympics 100 Meter Dash, followed by the finals for all four classes starting at 9:30. Thursday's Sports Update
The Nebraska baseball team will host the Michigan Wolverines tonight, in game one of a big three game series at Hawks Field. With just three games left in the regular season, the Huskers are currently in a three-way tie with Ohio State and Minnesota for second place in the Big Ten standings. Jim Boeve has resigned as Head Coach of the Hastings College Baseball team to take additional responsibilities with the college. Boeve coached the Broncos for 24 years (572-635), leading them to seven NIAC/GPAC Conference Championships and two NIAC/GPAC Tournament Championships. He will remain on the faculty as Assistant Professor of Sociology and maintain his current course load. Hastings College officials say a search for a new Head Coach will begin immediately. The Nebraska women's basketball team's Big Ten Conference schedule includes six games against 2013 postseason qualifiers. The Huskers announced their Big Ten home and road opponents yesterday after the conference released the new one-year grouping of single and double plays within Big Ten women's basketball. Husker fans will get the chance to see 2013 NCAA Tournament qualifiers Purdue, Penn State, Michigan and Michigan State, along with 2013 WNIT qualifiers Illinois and Minnesota in the first Big Ten home season at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Northwestern and Indiana also will visit the Huskers on their new home court in 2013-14. Nebraska, which faced a schedule that was ranked 12th-nationally in 2012-13, will play a total of nine home games against 2013 postseason teams, including six home games against foes that advanced to the second round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament.

Wednesday's Sports Update
The Nebraska baseball team closed out the non-conference portion of their regular season schedule with a 12-9 win over the Creighton Bluejays at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha. The Huskers will close out the regular season this weekend, with a three game homestand against the Michigan Wolverines. Game one is tomorrow night. You will be able to hear the Huskers and Wolverines on 1340 AM KGFW starting at 6:04, first pitch will be at 6:35. UNK first baseman/outfielder Brian Wuest is a semifinalist again for the 2013 Tino Martinez Award. The award, which started in 2010, goes to the most outstanding Division II baseball player. Wuest (Prosper, Texas) started all 45 games for the Lopers this year, leading the team in nine offensive categories while ranking first in the MIAA in slugging percentage (.821) and RBI’s (64). Finalists for the award will be named on Monday, May 20th with the winner being announced after the conclusion of the NCAA D2 Championships in early June. After being scouted by several Major Leagues ballclubs, he more than likely will be selected in the MLB Draft in June. The UNK track & field team will be sending eight men and two women to the 2013 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships May 23-25 in Pueblo, Colo. A top eight finish in any event is good for All-American honors. In March, Marissa Bongers (3rd/800 meters) and Dillon Schrodt (7th/heptathlon) earned All-American honors at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Alabama. UNK’s other two qualifiers were Tanner Fruit (13th/5,000 meters) and Mark Seeba (pole vault). Last May, Paul Pape (8th/800) and Marty Molina (7th/triple jump) cracked the top eight. Molina also was an All-American in 2012 (indoors & outdoors) in the triple. The Nebraska men's basketball team is set to face Iowa, Michigan State, Minnesota and Wisconsin once each during the 2013-14 season, as the Big Ten Conference announced the single-play matchups on Tuesday. With an 18-game conference schedule, four teams are deemed single-play opponents, while Nebraska will face the remaining seven teams in Lincoln and on the road. This season, Nebraska’s single-play home opponents are Wisconsin and Minnesota, while Iowa and Michigan State will be the two teams NU only faces on the road. Nebraska’s Big Ten home slate at Pinnacle Bank Arena will feature six of the seven Big Ten teams which made the NCAA Tournament in 2012-13, including NCAA runner-up Michigan, Big Ten regular-season champion Indiana, Big Ten Tournament champion Ohio State, NCAA qualifiers Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin, as well as Northwestern, Penn State and Purdue. On the road, Nebraska will make trips to Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern, Ohio State, Penn State and Purdue. The Hastings College softball team saw their season come to an end in the opening round of the NAIA Softball National Tournament as Freed-Hardeman defeated the Broncos 9-2 yesterday in Oklahoma City, OK. The Broncos season ends at 29-14 while earning their first ever regular season Great Plains Athletic Conference Championship.

Tuesday's Sports Update
UNK Athletic Director Jon McBride is stepping down from his post. McBride's resignation is effective July 31st of this year. McBride arrived at UNK in August 2002. During his tenure at UNK, the Lopers captured seven (out of 10) Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference All-Sports Trophies, three Division II Wrestling Championships, a national runner-up finish in volleyball, and an Elite 8 appearance in men’s basketball. McBride will now shifts his focus to living with Parkinson’s Disease, which he was diagnosed with in 2009. UNK Chancellor Doug Kristensen says a national search for a new athletic director has already begun. He has engaged a national search consultant and appointed a committee to advise him. The Nebraska baseball team plays their final non-conference game of the regular season tonight, taking on the Creighton Bluejays at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha. The two in-state rivals were scheduled to play three times this season, but the game in Lincoln was cancelled due to weather. Creighton won the only other meeting this season, 5-3, on Friday, April 26th, to open the TD Ameritrade Classic. Tonight's game can be heard on 1340 AM KGFW starting at 6:30, first pitch is at 7:05. Monday's Sports Update
The Nebraska baseball team (23-26, 14-7 Big Ten) took care of business yestereday afternoon with a 8-0 road win over the Minnesota Golden Gophers (29-18, 12-5) in the rubber match of the series. The Huskers won all four of their Big Ten Conference road series this season, posting a 9-3 record in 12 conference road games. The Huskers wrap up non-conference play tomorrow night with a game against in state rival Creighton at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha. You can hear the Huskers and Bluejays on 1340 AM KGFW starting at 6:30, first pitch will be at 7:05. The Nebraska baseball team will wrap up the regular season at home this weekend with a three game series against the Michigan Wolverines starting this Thursday night. Senior Marty Molina and junior Andrea Howe led the UNK track & field team this past weekend at three “Last Chance” meets. Select Lopers competed Friday at the Concordia Twilight meet in Seward as well as the Dr. Keeler Invitational in Naperville, Ill. On Saturday, UNK was at the Sam Williams Twilight Qualifier in Emporia, Kans. These meets are the last chance for student-athletes to improve their times and marks for the NCAA Championships later this month. Molina (Kearney H.S.) is now ranked eighth in the nation in the triple jump after going 50-10.25 in a winning effort Saturday at Emporia State. On Friday at Concordia, Howe (Beatrice) was runner up in the discus with a season-best toss of 151-6. She bested that throw, and moved up to 14th on the national list, by winning the discus Saturday at Emporia with a throw of 156-9. The NCAA field will be released early this week.
