Thursday's KGFW Sports Gram

After dropping a three-game series to the Michigan Wolverines (29-26) last week at Hawks Field, the Nebraska baseball team (26-28) responded with a 11-2 win yesterday afternoon in the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament at Target Field in Minnesota. The Huskers were led by sophomore lefty Kyle Kubat, who pitched 7-innings of one-hit ball to pick up his 10th win of the year. The 3rd seeded Huskers return to Target Field this afternoon to take on the tourney's 2nd-seed Ohio State. You can hear the Huskers and Buckeyes on 1340 AM KGFW starting at 3:00 this afternoon, first pitch is at 3:35.

UNK senior first baseman/outfielder Brian Wuest is a finalist for the 2013 Tino Martinez Award, an honor that goes to Division II’s top player. Wuest (Prosper, Texas) was one of 41 players selected as a semifinalist last week, that list has been narrowed to 10. The 6-2, 215 lbs. Wuest finished 2013 batting .397 with 17 doubles, 15 HR’s and 64 RBI’s. Having an MIAA-best slugging percentage of .821, he draw 42 walks and recorded an OPS (on-base percentage plus slugging average) of 1.354, tops in the region. The winner of the 2013 Tino Martinez Award will be announced following the D2 World Series.

Ten members of the UNK track & field team are in Pueblo, Colorado today for the start of the the 2013 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The action begins this morning at 11:30 (Central) with the decathlon and finishes up Saturday at around 10:00 that night. NCAA.com will have live results and live video throughout the three days. Below is when the qualified Lopers will compete (All times listed are Central); weather may change the schedule as there is a chance of rain all weekend. A top eight finish in any event is good for All-American honors.

  Legion Baseball,

The Kearney Runza Seniors picked up a pair of Cornhusker League wins last night at Memorial Field here in Kearney. The Runza Seniors won yesterday's opener 16-1, but needed a walk off single from Blake Holtmeier in the bottom of the seventh inning to post a 11-10 win in the nightcap. Now 3-0 on the season and 2-0 in Cornhusker League play, the Runza Seniors and Post 52 Juniors are now off until this Saturday when they host Lincoln Pius.

In other Legion Baseball action, the Kearney Little Ceasers Seniors and Five Points Bank Juniors played in Palmer last night. Little Ceasers is now 2-0 on the year after a 13-10 win, while Five Points falls to 1-1 on the season after a 3-2 loss. The Little Ceasers Seniors and Five Points Banks Juniors host McCook tonight at Memorial Field. The Juniors game begins at 5:30, the Seniors at 8:00.
