The Mountain West Conference announced on Thursday that Nebraska’s Sept. 13th football game at Fresno State will kick off at 9:30 p.m. Central (7:30 PT in Fresno). The meeting at Fresno State will be the second all-time between the schools, following a 42-29 Nebraska victory at Memorial Stadium in 2011. The Bulldogs will make a return trip to Lincoln in the 2016 season. Fresno State is coming off an 11-2 record in 2013, capped by a trip to the Las Vegas Bowl. The Sept. 13th contest in California is the third night game on the Huskers’ 2014 schedule announced this week. Nebraska’s Sept. 20th game against Miami and their Oct. 4th game at Michigan State will both kick off at 7:00 p.m. CT. For more visit www.HUSKERMAX.com.
The Nebraska baseball team returns to Big Ten action this weekend with 3-home games against the Northwestern Wildcats. Winners of five-straight and 10 of their last 11, the Huskers (25-14, 7-2 Big Ten) have won 6-straight conference games. Nebraska enters the series second in the Big Ten standings with a 7-2 conference record, while Northwestern enters the week 11th in the Big Ten with a 2-9 record, including an 0-2 road record. Northwestern dropped the first two games of its series at Penn State before the third game was canceled. Nebraska was able to win all three games in the season series in 2013, including an epic 16-inning affair. Game one between Nebraska and Northwestern can be heard on your home for the Huskers 1340 AM KGFW starting Friday night at 6:30, first pitch is at 7:00.
The Nebraska volleyball team will open the 2014 spring schedule this weekend as they will travel to face Iowa State in Ames, Iowa on Saturday. The match is slated for 2 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum. The Huskers will continue the spring season next Saturday, April 26 in Wayne, Neb., with a match against Creighton at 2 p.m., at Rice Auditorium. The match is sold out and 50 percent of the all proceeds are going to the re-construction of the Wayne Summer Sports Complex that was destroyed by the October tornado that hit the Wayne area last fall.
The UNK baseball team was edged by the Pittsburg State Gorillas 6-5 in 10-innings last night, in game one of a four-game MIAA series in Kansas. With the loss, the Lopers fall to 24-16 on the season and 18-15 in conference play. The two teams play a double header today starting at 3:00. The two teams will wrap up the series with a single 9-inning game tomorrow afternoon.
The MIAA has announced the pairings and seedings for the MIAA Tennis Championships. The Championships are scheduled to get underway on April 25 at 9 a.m. from the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, Mo. The men will kick things off on Friday with third seeded Nebraska-Kearney taking on the sixth seed Emporia State. Northwest Missouri has earned the top seed and at least a share of the MIAA regular season championship and will have a bye into the semi-finals. The UNK women are the tourney's third seed and will face sixth seed Northwest Missouri. Northeastern State earns the top seed in the women’s tournament and will face of with Washburn.

UNK women’s soccer coach John Maessner on Thursday announced that Kaitlyn Pawloski (Hastings H.S.) and Madalynn Doughty (North Platte H.S.) will join the Lopers in the fall. In February, UNK added four Nebraska natives to its 2014 roster. The younger sister of Loper junior Ashtin Pawloski, Kaitlyn is a 5-4 forward/midfielder who helped the Tigers qualify for the Class B state tourney the past three years. Doughty 5-0 will be a right forward or right defender for the Lopers. Ranked No. 1 in her class, she helped the Bulldogs win the last two GNAC titles and leaves with school records for most assists in a season and career. UNK is currently going through spring workouts.

The Nebraska baseball team picked up a 5th-straight win last night, crushing the UNO Mavericks 17-6 at Hawks Field in Lincoln. The Huskers, who have won 6-straight Big Ten games, return to conference action this weekend when they host the Northwestern Wildcats in a 3-game series beginning Friday.
University of Nebraska Men’s Basketball Coach Tim Miles announced Wednesday that point guard Tarin Smith (Ocean Township, N.J.) signed a National Letter-of-Intent with the Nebraska basketball program. Smith is a 6-foot-2, 175-pounder who played for Hall of Fame Coach Bob Hurley at St. Anthony, helping the Friars to consecutive state runner-up finishes. Smith is the second member of Nebraska’s recruiting class, joining 6-foot-10 center Jacob Hammond (Comanche, Okla.), who signed with Nebraska in the fall. Hammond averaged 26.2 points, 14.8 rebounds and 5.7 blocks per game this season while earning first-team all-state Class 3A honors from the Daily Oklahoman. A finalist for Mr. Basketball in the state of Oklahoma, Hammond was also named District 5 Player of the Year by the Oklahoma Basketball Coaches Association in 2014.

The Nebraska baseball team banged out a season best 22-hits in a 14-5 route of the Kansas State Wildcats last night at Hawks Field in Lincoln. The winners of 4-straight, the Huskers continue their current 5-game homestand tonight when they host the Mavericks of UNO. You can hear tonight's game on your home for the Huskers 1340 AM KGFW starting at 6:04, first pitch is at 6:35. The Huskers return to Big Ten play this weekend when they host Northwestern.
The UNK women’s tennis team closed out the 2014 regular season by sweeping Fort Hays State, 9-0, yesterday at Harmon Park. The dual was originally set for Monday but pushed back due to weather. The Lopers (18-6, 7-3), ranked sixth (NCAA) and eighth (ITA) in the Central Region, have now won 13 of its matches by 9-0 scores. Both Loper teams are off until the MIAA Tournament next weekend (April 25-27) in Springfield, Mo.
The UNK Athletic Department is inviting the public to the Orthman Senior Student Athlete Recognition & Awards Banquet. This semi-formal event will take place on Tuesday, April 22nd at 7:00 p.m. in the Nebraskan Student Union's Ponderosa Room. Tickets may be purchased by the General Public for $20.00 per person. The Nebraska Coaches Association (NCA) have named the athletes and coaches for the 2014 NCA Boys’ and Girls’ All-Star games. The coaches are NCA members selected by their coaching peers. The athletes, graduating seniors, are selected by a committee of NCA member coaches. Athletes will be placed on specific teams in June. The list of All-Stars includes Kearney High's Damien Austin, Rachel Jelden of Holdrege, and UNK recruits Ty Danielson of York and McKenzie Brown of Grand Island Northwest. The 35th Annual NCA Girls’ Basketball All-Star will be played at Lincoln North Star High School on Monday, July 22 followed by the 46th Annual Boys’ Basketball NCA All-Star game.
Kearney Federal Credit Union, in partnership with Kearney Soccer Club, is sponsoring the First Annual Spring Fling Soccer Tournament May 2nd through May 4th at West Lincoln Way and Ted Baldwin Soccer Parks in Kearney. Thirteen teams from the Kearney area and an additional twenty-six teams from across the state have registered to complete in the tournament.

The Huskers host the Kansas State Wildcats tonight and the UNO Mavericks tomorrow night at Hawks Field. The Huskers return to Big Ten play this weekend when they host Northwestern. The Loper women's tennis team is scheduled to wrap up the regular season today when they host Fort Hays, with first serve at 3:30 at the Harmon Park courts. The MIAA Tourney begins a week from this Friday in Springfield, Missouri.

I-back Imani Cross rushed for 100 yards and two scores, while Nebraska’s four quarterbacks combined for 356 yards and three touchdowns, as the Red team won the annual Red/White Spring Game with a 55-46 victory Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium. The game featured a modified scoring system with points for both offensive and defensive plays. The Huskers begin their 125th season of football on Saturday, Aug. 30th, when they host Florida Atlantic in the season opener at Memorial Stadium. A two-out RBI single in the top of the 10th inning secured a 3-2 win and a series sweep of the Minnesota Golden Gophers by the Nebraska baseball team yesterday afternoon in Minneapolis. With their second straight conference sweep, the Huskers are 7-2 in league play and have swept consecutive conference series for the first time since 2006. The Huskers return to Hawks Field tomorrow night when they host the Kansas State Wildcats.
Junior Max Ayoub hit a sharp single up the middle in the bottom of the ninth to help the UNK baseball team rally past Washburn, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at Memorial Field. The two-run rally in the ninth helped the Lopers (24-15, 18-14) take three of four from the Ichabods (18-18-18, 1715). UNK, down to 10 healthy position players, had split four straight series. The Lopers travel to Pittsburg State this weekend. Due to the Easter Holiday, that series will be Thursday-Saturday.
Senior third baseman Sarah Rome belted a two-run homer and the UNK softball team scored three times in the top of the seventh to beat Missouri Southern State, 7-4, in the first game of a double header Saturday in Joplin. The Lions (15-31, 7-15) had 14 hits to take the nightcap, 10-2 (5 innings). The Loper softball team (11-25, 9-15) is off until an April 22nd home double header with Chadron State.
The UNK track & field team won five events and had five national marks at the Concordia Invitational Saturday in Seward. The non-team scoring meet featured NAIA and Division III schools around the area. Senior thrower Michael Thalken (Ogallala) paced the Lopers as he won the hammer with a throw of 191-11, the second best effort in school history. The throw places him 12th on the national list. On the track, Brainard junior Marissa Bongers ran past the 800 field, turning in a 2:10.38 to win by seven seconds. The time currently is the fourth best in D2 and not too far off her school record (2:09.02). UNK is at the Doane Relays this Friday and Saturday. Select Lopers will compete in the prestigious Mt. Sac (California) and Kansas Relays as well.
The UNK tennis teams capped a big week by both defeating Emporia State Saturday afternoon at Harmon Park. The Loper women won 9-0 to improve to 17-6 (6-3) while the men managed a 5-4 victory to be at 16-4 (3-2). In the latest NCAA Central Region rankings, the UNK women came in seventh with the Hornets (15-6, 7-3) sixth; seven teams make the NCAA Tournament field later this spring. The Loper women are schedule to wrap up the regular season today when they host Fort Hays, with first serve at 3:30 at the Harmon Park courts.
