KGFW Sports – Moos Speaks, Wisconsin Decision, 5 Lopers Honored

By News Apr 10, 2020 | 10:20 AM

Nebraska Athletic Director Bill Moos, who normally makes a spring tour of the state, recently held a Zoom meeting with NU’s top 100 Boosters. Moos told donors that leadership on campus and across the BIG Ten is in control and has student athletes safety and best interest in mind. When asked if there will be college football in 2020 Moos says that will be determined by the big picture in our society.

Citing a time of “unprecedented uncertainty in college athletics,” Wisconsin officials announced Thursday that the Badgers would not seek waivers for seniors in spring sports whose final seasons were cut short by the coronavirus pandemic. Last month, the NCAA Division I Council approved an extension of eligibility for athletes in spring sports and relaxed scholarship limits to allow seniors in spring sports to return for the 2020-21 academic year. Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez said Wisconsin’s decision would affect about 35 seniors in spring sports, and that many of them already had internships or jobs lined up.

Three former Huskers are projected to hear their names late in the NFL draft which starts on April 23rd. Cornerback Lamar Jackson is expected to be a 6th round choice. Defensive tackles Carlos and Khalil Davis are predicted to be taken in the 7th round. That’s according to The Athletic’s Draft guide. No Huskers were taken in last years draft.

The Nebraska football team has another walk on kicker. Ryan Novosel, from New Trier High School in Winnetka, Illinois, announced he’ll join the Huskers next season. Kohl’s Kicking ranks him No. 100 among kickers in the 2020 class. He will be competing for the kicking duties with sophomore Chase Contreraz from Iowa Western, Tyler Crawford out of Oklahoma, and redshirt freshman from Kearney Gabe Heins. The Husker used six kickers on field goal attempts last season.

Husker women’s basketball standout Maurtice Ivy was announced as the fourth member of the 2020 University of Nebraska Athletic Hall of Fame class Wednesday. As the 1988 Big Eight Player of the Year, she led the Huskers to the Big Eight regular-season title and a trip to the program’s first NCAA Tournament. The first 2,000-point scorer in program history, Ivy was also the first Husker to be a three-time all-conference selection and the first to be named conference player of the year. She was only the second Husker to have her jersey retired.

Five Lopers have been named to the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) All-American Team. That list of honorees includes juniors Josh Portillo (125 lbs.), Wesley Dawkins (133 lbs.), Sam Turner (149 lbs.), Matt Malcolm (165 lbs.) and senior Jarrod Hinrichs (285 lbs.). UNK qualified seven for the NCAA meet which was set to be held March 13-14 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. However this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic that meet was canceled. Thus the All-American honors were based on each wrestler’s overall body of work through the super-regional tournaments and up to the national championships.
