KGFW Sports – Haarberg Joins NU and More Recruiting News

By News May 11, 2020 | 5:59 AM

Kearney Catholic quarterback Heinrich Haarberg announced his commitment to the Huskers on social media Friday. The 6-foot-5, 185-pound three-star prospect chose the Huskers within a week of receiving the offer. He also had offers from power-five programs Vanderbilt, North Carolina State and Boston College. He is the first in-state Husker QB commit since 2003. His commitment gives Nebraska seven pledges in the 2021 recruiting cycle.

The Huskers aren’t done recruiting quarterbacks. Riley Leonard from Alabama still has an offer on the table. Duke, Southern Miss and Syracuse have also shown interest in the 6-foot-4, 190-pound two-sport standout, who is expected to decide on a school sometime in June.

With Noah Vedral entering the transfer portal, the Huskers have only three scholarship QBs in junior Adrian Martinez, redshirt freshman Luke McCaffrey and true freshman Logan Smothers.

Linebacker Drew Monin from Connecticut is joining the Huskers as a 2020 walk-on. The 6-foot-1, 220-pounder announced his decision on social media this weekend. Monin began hearing from Nebraska in mid-March, and was accepted as a student at Nebraska in mid-April.

Walk-on offensive lineman Xavier Trevino has announced he’s transferring to North Dakota, where he’ll be on scholarship.

After committing to out-of-state schools, Avante Dickerson and Keagan Johnson have dealt with some hateful criticism. Dickerson, the state’s top prospect will play at Minnesota while Johnson chose Iowa last week.

NCAA president Mark Emmert says he doesn’t envision colleges competing in fall sports unless students return to campus, and he expects decisions “sometime in June, maybe by the Fourth of July.”

The Nebraska wrestling team has picked up a commitment from a three-time state champion. Omaha Skutt’s Nic Stoltenberg. Stoltenberg joins a 2020 Husker recruiting class that was ranked 6th nationally in November.
