KGFW Sports – Legion Baseball Begins, Huskers Add Pitching and Saltdogs Cancels Their Season

The abbreviated Legion Baseball season begins this week. The Runza Seniors will open their season Thursday, hosting Grand Island Home Federal in a double-header at Memorial Field. Both games of that double-dip can be heard on your long time home of Kearney Legion baseball, KGFW and online at KGFW.com. The Post 52 Juniors open their season Thursday at a four day tournament in Lincoln. Their first home games are Thursday, June 24th when they host Hastings in a double-header at Memorial Field. The Jerseys Seniors and Five Points Juniors open their season Thursday with games at St. Paul. Five Points’ home opener will be Saturday when they host Grand Island in a double-header at Memorial Field. The Jerseys Seniors first home game is Friday, June 26th when they host Minden. Due to current restrictions attendance at games at Kearney’s Memorial Field will be limited to immediate family members. Find more at BASEBALLKEARNEY.COM

The Kearney High School weight room will reopen today. The weight room will open with directive health measures in place. Once complete, the plan will be communicated by the head coaches to their student-athletes. The weight room will not be open to the public or staff. Horizon and Sunrise Middle School weight rooms are not included in the plan at this time. Current state and NSAA guidelines designate that athletic teams, fine arts, and other high school activity groups are not to meet for practices.

The Nebraska baseball team has added to its pitching staff. Graduate transfer Chance Hroch, a 6-foot-3 right-hander will play his final season in Lincoln after four years at New Mexico State. Hroch was 10-1 with a 2.74 ERA in 2018 and earned All WAC first team honors.

The Lincoln Saltdogs are cancelling their 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Saltdogs are members of the American Association which will play a limited schedule with only six teams participating.

The Hastings Sodbusters will open their season Friday, June 26th, hosting the Fremont Moo at Duncan Field. Hastings will be one of only six teams in the Expedition League this season, as the COVID-19 pandemic has forced four teams in the league to forgo their 2020 seasons. The six teams will play 52 games, with the regular season coming to an end Aug. 19th. The teams will still be split into the Lewis and Clark divisions, with the division winners facing each other for the league championship series, which will be Aug. 21-23.
