COVID-19 Update 6/30/20: HHD cancelled, State Fair update pending, KPS back to school plans

UPDATE: The Nebraska State Fair Board voted Tuesday morning to hold a modified, youth focused State Fair.

GRAND ISLAND – (KGFW) – Husker Harvest Days outside of Grand Island has been cancelled due to ongoing coronavirus concerns. In a press release Monday, organizers noted the event’s draw of visitors from around the county and world and say a virtual Husker Harvest Days is being planned.

Governor Pete Ricketts will join the Nebraska State Fair Board this morning for an announcement regarding the plans for the 2020 fair. The press conference is scheduled for 10:15 a.m. KGFW will air it live.

The Kearney Public Schools Board discussed COVID-19 and heard the District’s ‘blueprint’ for reopening this Fall at its annual retreat yesterday. Blueprint tiers are based on the possible reimplementation of Directed Health Measures and includes a full reopening along with contengencies for possible short and long-term breaks with distant learning. A survey will be sent to KPS parents after the public has had time to review the plan. KPS Superintendent Dr. Kent Edwards will join KGFW “Talk of the Town” this morning at 9:07 a.m.

143 new COVID-19 cases were reported in Nebraska yesterday – bringing the state’s total to 19,042. 13,547 have recovered. There are 121 active coronavirus patients in Nebraska hospitals. According to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, two more Nebraskans have died from COVID-19, bringing the state total to 269. The State’s total positive test rate has fallen to less than 11% of nearly 180,000 tests.
