KGFW Sports – Husker Parents Hire Attorney and Much More 8/21/20

By News Aug 21, 2020 | 6:35 AM

A group of Nebraska football parents have hired a Norfolk-based lawyer and on Thursday sent a letter demanding Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren provide further documentation about the vote that led to the postponement of the league’s 2020 football season. Parents of 11 players have retained Michael Flood, a former Nebraska politician. The parents want the information by noon Monday and are threatening to file a lawsuit in Nebraska’s U.S. District Court if the league doesn’t provide the information. Parents of Big Ten players are also planning to gather today (fri) at conference headquarters in Rosemont, Illinois, to try to get answers.

The Senior Bowl put out their list of the top 250 seniors in the country Thursday. Four Huskers were included on the list; left tackle Brenden Jaimes, defensive back Dicaprio Bootle, safety Deontai Williams and outside linebacker JoJo Domann. The 2021 Senior Bowl is currently set for Jan. 30th.

The Nebraska football team has added a dozen players to its online roster. Their roster now stands at 156 players: 79 scholarship and 77 walk-ons. All but 25 (11 seniors and 14 redshirt juniors) have joined the program since coach Scott Frost took over.

Thomas Fidone, the four-star Council Bluffs tight end being pursued by the Huskers, has been named a second-team All-American by USA Today. A four-star prospect, Fidone is set to announce his verbal commitment on Aug. 26th. He has narrowed his choices to Nebraska, Michigan, LSU, Notre Dame and Penn State. He is rated by Top247 as the nation’s 37th best prospect regardless of position

Nebraska and every other FBS program that won’t play this fall will be allowed to conduct 12 hours of football work each week beginning Monday. The NCAA Football Oversight Committee and the Division I Council approved the plan earlier this week. No more than five hours can be on-field skill instruction. No contact or full pads will be allowed, though players may wear helmets. The other seven hours may go toward strength and conditioning, meetings and film review. The model also includes a four-hour daily limit and requires two off days each week. The next task for the Oversight Committee is to parse through the challenges of a potential spring season. Sports Illustrated reported the group hopes to have the framework for a spring season plan to the Council by mid-September.

The Division I Council has added more flexibility to the plan of preserving eligibility to affected fall-sport athletes. They recommend providing an additional year of eligibility and an additional year to complete it. The plan would also prohibit schools from requiring players to waive legal rights regarding COVID-19 as a condition of participation. Schools would also not be allowed to reduce or remove scholarships from players who opt out of the season. The Division I Board of Directors will discuss those recommendations today.

The Tri-City Storm acquired forward Sutter Muzzatti and a 2022 8th Round Phase I Draft Pick from the Muskegon Lumberjacks in exchange for a 2021 7th Round Phase II Draft Pick and a 2022 6th Round Phase I Draft Pick. Muzzatti was drafted by Muskegon in the 3rd Round of the 2019 USHL Phase I Draft and appeared in two games for the Lumberjacks during the 2019-2020 season.

The NAIA has announced the rescheduled dates for its fall sports championships. The Football title game will be on May 10 in Grambling, Louisiana. The women’s soccer championships will take place April 27-May 3 in Foley, Alabama. Cross Country will be April 9 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
