Nebraska’s athletic department has furloughed 51 employees and cut other staffers’ salaries by 10 percent through the end of the year. The cost-saving measures were made to help offset the financial impacts of the postponement of the Big Ten’s fall athletic season. Iowa is dropping four sports to help offset revenue losses related to the pandemic.
Omaha Westside safety Koby Bretz has become the latest in-state player to receive a Nebraska offer for 2021. The 6-foot-2, 195-pound safety also has offers from Kansas State, Wyoming, Ohio, Buffalo, Miami (Ohio) and Northern Illinois.
The NCAA has made it official and granted an extra year of eligibility to athletes in Division I fall sports.
Nebraska’s top prep basketball recruit has announced his top 12 schools and the Huskers are not included. Millard North senior Hunter Sallis has narrowed his choices and Creighton is still in the mix but not Nebraska. Kentucky, North Carolina, Michigan, Kansas, UCLA, Oregon, Gonzaga, Auburn, Iowa State, Alabama and Louisville are the others Sallis is still considering.
Hastings beat Lincoln North Star 35-8 on Friday in the first high school football game in the state in the COVID-19 pandemic. Many more prep teams will begin the season across the state this week.
