KEARNEY, Neb. (KGFW) – Every fourth-grader at one Kearney elementary school was sent home following three positive coronavirus cases. Kearney Public Schools communications director Tori Stofferson says the decision was made out of an abundance of caution.

“KPS has elected to follow stricter guidelines and/or protocols than those recommended by the CDC. Therefore, out of an abundance of caution and even with limited potential exposure, KPS made the decision to keep all three 4th Grade sections home for two days so we can monitor, clean, and sanitize those respective classrooms.”

According to Stofferson, one staff member and two students have tested positive at Meadowlark Elementary. However, so far, she says the district has “been very fortunate” amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

“We only have five active, positive cases out of 883 employees and six active cases out of nearly 6,000 students. We have no confirmed cases of “school-related” spread at this time. We believe this can be attributed to our staff and students complying with the health and safety protocols that KPS has implemented.”
