KGFW Sports – Husker Game Week, High School Updates 10/19/20

It’s game week. The Nebraska football team opens the 2020 season this Saturday at Ohio State. Captains for the 2020 season were announced over the weekend. The five captains as selected by their teammates are defensive back Dicaprio Bootle, offensive lineman Matt Farniok, quarterback Adrian Martinez, linebacker Collin Miller and wide receiver Kade Warner. This marks the second straight season that Farniok and Martinez were named captains, becoming the 12th and 13th two-time captains in school history and the first since Jerald Foster (2017-18). The Huskers open the season at Ohio State this Saturday, kickoff will be at 11:00.

Hastings College volleyball team lost at 6th-ranked Northwestern Saturday (25-21, 21-25, 23-25, 21-25. The Lady Broncos are off until this Friday when they host Dakota Wesleyan at Lynn Farrell Arena. The Hastings College football team enjoyed a bye this past weekend. They host Briar Cliff this Saturday at Lloyd Wilson Field.

The Tri-City Storm opened Corn Cup exhibition play with a 4-2 home win over the Lincoln Stars Saturday. The Storm continue preseason action Wednesday when they host the Omaha Lancers. Puck drop for Wednesday’s game is set for 7:05pm.

The all-inclusive bracket for the 24 eligible Class A football teams was released by the NSAA Saturday. The top eight seeds receive first round byes… they are: #1 Bellevue West, #2 Omaha Westside, #3 Millard South, #4 Lincoln Southeast, # 5 Elkhorn South, #6 Omaha Creighton Prep, #7 Lincoln East, #8 Gretna. The teams seeded 9th-to-16th will host first round games this Friday. The first-round matchups are: #9 Kearney High vs. #24 Lincoln Northeast; #10 North Platte vs. #23 Lincoln High; #11 Millard North vs. #22 Norfolk; #12 Fremont vs. #21 Papillion-La Vista South; #13 Columbus vs. #20 Papillion-La Vista; #14 Millard West vs. #19 Bellevue East; #15 Grand Island vs. #18 Lincoln Pius X; #16 Lincoln North Star vs. #17 Lincoln Southwest. The playoffs continue Oct. 30th with the Round of 16. The Quarterfinals are Nov. 6th, the semifinals Nov. 13th and the Championship Game will be played at Memorial Stadium at 7:15 p.m. Nov. 23rd.

The first-round geographical-based brackets for the two eight-man classes were also released Saturday. Thursday’s winners then will be put on a 16-team statewide bracket, seeded by their regular-season NSAA point averages, that begins Oct. 30th. Classes B, C-1, C-2 and Six Man have one more week of regular season play before their 16-team statewide brackets are made for the Oct. 30th first round.
