KGFW Sports – Minn and Creighton Top NU, UNK and High School Update 12/14/20

By News Dec 14, 2020 | 5:40 AM

A shorthanded Minnesota football team topped the Huskers Saturday at Memorial Stadium, 24-17. The Gophers, who hadn’t played a game since Noverber 20th, traveled to Lincoln missing nearly three dozen players because of COVID-19 protocols, or injuries. The loss dropped the Huskers to 2-5 on the season… their fourth straight losing season. The Huskers will close out the 2020 season this Friday afternoon in Piscataway, New Jersey with a Week-9 matchup against Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights, who feature former Husker Noah Vedral at QB, are 3-5 on the season after Saturday’s 27-24 overtime win at Maryland. The Huskers and Scarlet Knights will kickoff Friday afternoon at 3:00 Central Time.

The 8th ranked Creighton Bluejays rolled the Nebraska men’s basketball team Friday at the CHI Health Center in Omaha, 98-74. Teddy Allen led three Huskers in double figures, finishing with a career-high 26 points and nine rebounds. With the victory Creighton improved to 4-1 on the season, while the Husker slip to 3-3 on the year. The Jays open Big East play tonight, hosting Marquette at 8:00. The Huskers men are off until Monday, Dec. 21st, when they open Big Ten play at home against 13th ranked Wisconsin.

The Nebraska women’s basketball team is playing their first road game of the season tonight at Creighton. The Husker and the Jays will tipoff at 5:00.

The UNK basketball teams closed out a two-game road swing Saturday at Central Oklahoma. The Bronchos topped the Loper men 72-65, while the UNK women won 63-43 to improve to 4-0 on the season. The UNK basketball teams host Rogers State and Northeastern State this week to close out the first semester. Those games are a Friday/Sunday format due to winter graduation ceremonies.

The UNK men’s track and field team finished in first place and the women in second place at the annual UNK Pre-Holiday Classic. The three-team meet in Cushing Coliseum also featured Fort Hays State and former MIAA member Southwest Baptist (Mo.). Overall, the Loper men won eight events with the women four. Individually; McCook redshirt senior Tiara Schmidt broke her own school record in the weight throw. Her 62-6 effort leads NCAA Division II at the moment. She also won the shot put with a toss of 46-2.75. That ranks second nationally. Schmidt was one of two Lopers to win twice. Giltner redshirt sophomore Alex Goracke was UNK’s other double gold medal recipient, leading in the weight throw (58-6) and shot (53-11). The Lopers are now off until a January 23rd meet at Northwest Missouri State.

The Tri-City Storm defeated the Omaha Lancers 4-1 on Military Appreciation Night at the Viaero Center Friday. Carter Mazur (2), Kyle Aucoin and Gavin Brindley all scored, while Todd Scott recorded his 4th victory of the season in net. The Storm now play four consecutive road games before hosting the Lincoln Stars on Thursday, December 31st. That four game road swing begins tomorrow night in Des Moines, Iowa.
