KGFW Sports – NLI Day, Avante is a Duck, Lopers are #12 and more

Feb 3, 2021 | 9:08 AM

Today is National Letter of Intent Signing Day. The Huskers have only two scholarships available after signing 23 prospects in the early signing period in December. The Huskers were hoping to use one of those scholarships on the top prospect in Nebraska, Omaha Westside’s Avante Dickerson, but he announced his commitment to Oregon this morning.

The Huskers did add a pair of legacy walk-ons yesterday. The first is 6-foot-1 195-pound defensive back Michael Booker III from Texas. Michael’s father was a defensive back for the Huskers in the mid-1990s and went on to be a first-round NFL Draft pick who had a five-year career with the Atlanta Falcons and Tennessee Titans.

The second walk-on is 6-foot-1 190-pound Grant Lohr out of Oklahoma. Grant is the son of former Husker defensive lineman Jason Lohr, who was in the program from 1998 to 2003. They are the 18th and 19th walk-ons in the Husker’s 2021 recruiting class.

The UNK football team is expecting to add roughly 20 recruits today including walk-ons. Coach Lynn and his staff will be at Cunningham’s on the Lake tonight at 5:30 p.m. to talk about the class.

Kearney High and Kearney Catholic are both hosting Letter of Intent Signing ceremonies today. Eleven Bearcats are putting pen to paper at 4:00 in the CHAT/Auditorium at KHS. Five members of the Kearney Catholic football team are signing their letters of intent at 10:00 in the Cope Coliseum foyer.

The Nebraska football team has reportedly found its new director of player development, and he is a face familiar to head coach Scott Frost… Marcus Castro-Walker. Castro-Walker spent time with Frost and much of NU’s coaching staff for a year as the director of player development in 2016 at Central Florida.

A former Husker standout is apparently joining Urban Meyer’s first NFL staff. According to reports, Carlos Polk will be an assistant special teams coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Polk was previously the assistant special teams coach for the Dallas Cowboys in 2019, before holding the same job title with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2014-18 and the (then) San Diego Chargers from 2009-12.

The Creighton men’s basketball team is hosting Georgetown tonight at the CHI Health Center in Omaha. The Bluejays moved up two spots in the latest AP and the Coaches Top-25 Poll. The Jays are now 15th in the Writers Poll, and 12th in the Coaches Poll. The Bluejays and Hoyas tipoff tonight at 8:00.

The Big Ten Conference announced a pair of start times for the Huskers yesterday. Nebraska’s game at Minnesota on Monday, Feb. 8th, will tip off at 7:00, while the Feb. 14th game at Penn State is set for a 2:00 p.m. tip. The Husker men, who have been idle since January 10th, are scheduled to travel to East Lansing this Saturday for a game against Michigan State. Tipoff will be at 5:30.

The UNK women’s basketball team is ranked 12th in both NCAA Division II Top 25 polls this week. The Lopers host Central Oklahoma tomorrow night and Newman on Saturday afternoon.

The captains for the Nebraska baseball team were announced yesterday, they are Joe Acker, Mojo Hagge, Jaxon Hallmark and Spencer Schwellenbach. The Huskers are still awaiting the release of their 2021 season schedule.
