KGFW Sports – Omaha to Host Entire NCAA Tourney, Huskers Add 1 and Jays Fall

Feb 4, 2021 | 7:45 AM

The entire NCAA women’s volleyball tournament will be played in Omaha later this spring. On Wednesday, the Division I Competition Oversight Committee approved consolidating the volleyball championship to one location, which was the final step needed to make the format change official. Omaha was already scheduled to host the Final Four. All 48 teams will compete at CHI Health Center Omaha and the adjoining convention center from April 13-24. If the schedule format is approved the teams that reach the championship match would likely be playing five matches over 11 days. The NCAA men’s basketball tournament has already been moved to Indianapolis and nearby areas, and the women’s basketball tournament could be headed to San Antonio.

The Huskers added just one player on National Letter of Intent Signing Day, four-star linebacker Wynden Ho’ohuli. According to 247Sports composite rankings, the 6-foot-3 220-pound Hawaii native is the 153rd best high school prospect in the nation. Fourteen of Nebraska’s 20 high school scholarship recruits were considered for prep All-America honors by Sports Illustrated. Eleven members of the scholarship class enrolled in January. The Huskers’ also announced a 20-member walk-on class yesterday, that includes 15 Nebraskans.

The Huskers have only two scholarships remaining to use on transfers this spring. The Huskers were hoping to use one of those scholarships on the top prospect in Nebraska, Omaha Westside’s Avante Dickerson, but the four-star defensive back announced his commitment to Oregon.

The UNK football team added 28 recruits yesterday, including five from Kearney; Princeton transfer Miko Maessner, Kearney High’s Jack Johnson, and Kearney Catholic’s Cale Conrad, Spencer Hogeland and Samson David.

Nebraska Athletic Director Bill Moos says the fate of the Ireland game will be decided in the next seven to 10 days. Should the Ireland contest be called off, Moos said, the Illinois game would likely remain on Aug. 28th, with the Husker visiting the Illini.

The Georgetown Hoyas were able to upset 15th ranked Creighton, 86-79, last night at the CHI Health Center in Omaha. Creighton will travel to Milwaukee Saturday for a rematch with Marquette. The Jays opened Big East play with an 89-84 loss to the Golden Eagles, December 14th in Omaha. Tipoff will be at 4:00.

The Nebraska women’s basketball team will be looking for their third straight Big Ten road win tonight at Penn State. The Huskers and Lady Lions tipoff at 5:00.

The UNK basketball teams host Central Oklahoma tonight at the Health and Sports Center. The women’s game tips off at 5:30, the men at 7:30.
