KGFW Sports – Dublin and the Husker Baseball Schedule are Out, UNK vs. UCM, Storm Trade and High School Update

Feb 18, 2021 | 7:19 AM

The Nebraska football team’s 2021 season opener is moving from Ireland to Illinois. The decision was made following extensive consultation with the Irish government, medical authorities and the administrative staffs at Nebraska and Illinois. The Huskers and Fighting Illini still plan to open the 2021 season on Aug. 28, but now the game will be played in Champaign at Illinois’ Memorial Stadium. Ticketholders will be contacted by their purchase provider in the coming days.

The Nebraska men’s basketball team dropped a second straight game at Maryland last night, 79-71. The Huskers return to Lincoln this Saturday for a game against Purdue. Tipoff at Pinnacle Bank Arena is set for 4:30 that afternoon.

The Big Ten Conference yesterday announced an update to Nebraska’s upcoming men’s basketball schedule. The Huskers will now host Penn State next Tuesday, with the start time to be announced closer to tipoff. The original matchup was scheduled for Jan. 30th, but was postponed following Nebraska’s pause last month. With yesterday’s announcement, three of the Huskers’ six postponed games have now been rescheduled.

The Husker women snapped their four game losing streak last night with a 71-64 win at 24th ranked Northwestern. It’s their second win over the nationally ranked Wildcats this season. The Husker women host Penn State Sunday afternoon at 2:00.

The Nebraska baseball team finally has its schedule. The Huskers will play a 44-game, conference-only schedule over 13 weeks, with five four-game weekends and eight three-game weekends. Each Big Ten team is slated to play every other Big Ten team at least three times. The Huskers are scheduled to open with two weekend series at neutral sites, the first four games against Purdue at Dell Diamond Stadium in Round Rock, Texas, beginning March 5, the second, two games each against Iowa and Ohio State at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, March 12-14. Nebraska isn’t scheduled to play at home until the weekend of March 26-28, when Minnesota comes to Hawks Field at Haymarket Park for a four-game series. The Huskers’ other home-series opponents include Maryland, Rutgers, Northwestern and Michigan. There will be no 2021 Big Ten Tournament—previously scheduled for Omaha in May.

The UNK basketball teams host Central Missouri tonight at the Health and Sports Center. The nationally ranked Lopers and Jennies are set to tipoff at 5:30. The Loper men’s game against the Mules will follow at 7:30.

The UNK volleyball team has re-entered the AVCA Division II Top-25 Poll, coming in at No. 16. The Lopers are the only MIAA team in the rankings this week. The Lopers begin conference play this Sunday in Hays, Kan., with matches against Emporia State and Newman.

UNK head coach Josh Lynn on Wednesday introduced Levi Gallas as the Loper football team’s new defensive coordinator. Also UNK’s defensive line coach, Gallas has been with the program since 2017. He replaces Scott Lewis who left the program earlier this winter to return to his alma mater, FCS-member Saint Francis (Pa.) University.

The UNK softball team has seen their schedule change due to the recent wintery weather. The Lopers, who saw a four-game tournament in Oklahoma called off last weekend (Feb. 12-13), have added two games at Regis on Friday. The Lopers and Rangers will play a double header in Denver starting at 12:00 p.m. Central. Regis has yet to play this year; the two teams haven’t met on the diamond since UNK was a member of the RMAC back in the spring of 2011.

The Tri-City Storm have completed a transaction with the Youngstown Phantoms to acquire forward Ben Schoen and multiple draft assets. Schoen has appeared in more than one hundred games and has accumulated sixty-three points in his USHL career. In this transaction, Tri-City acquired Schoen, and an 8th Round draft pick in the 2021, and 2022 USHL Phase II Draft. The Phantoms receive prospect forward Shane Lachance, a 1st and 4th Round draft pick in the 2021 USHL Phase II Draft, and a 1st Round draft pick in the 2022 USHL Phase II Draft. The Storm still hold at least one 1st Round Draft pick in the 2021, and 2022 USHL Phase II Draft. The Storm open an eight game homestand this Friday against the Lincoln Stars.
