KGFW Sports – Jays vs. Nova, Lopers vs. Pitt and Boys and Girls State Tourney

Mar 3, 2021 | 5:50 AM

The 14th ranked Creighton men’s basketball team has an important game tonight at Big East leader 10th ranked Villanova. In their February 13th meeting in Omaha, Creighton topped then 5th ranked Nova, 86-70. Tipoff tonight is at 7:30.

Creighton coach Greg McDermott apologized Tuesday for making insensitive comments with racial undertones during a locker-room speech after the team’s loss at Xavier Saturday. Creighton officials condemned McDermott’s post-game speech, stating that McDermott used “deplorable language that is inconsistent with the university’s values.” No specific disciplinary action has been revealed as personnel matters are handled confidentially, according to a university statement.

The Nebraska men’s basketball team will be looking for a third straight win tomorrow night at 5th ranked Iowa. The Huskers are coming off a dominating 72-51 win over Rutgers Monday night at Pinnacle Bank Arena. This will be the only regular season meeting between the two teams. A January meeting in Lincoln was cancelled due to the Huskers’ COVID outbreak. The Huskers and Hawkeyes tipoff tomorrow night at 8:00.

The nationally ranked UNK women’s basketball team is hosting a first round MIAA Tournament game tonight at the Health and Sports Center. The tourney’s third seed, the Lopers are facing the sixth-seed Pittsburg State. In their lone meeting in Kansas this season the Lopers posted a 57-53 win over the Gorillas. Tipoff at the Health and Sports Center is tonight at 6:00. The highest remaining seed will host the semifinals (March 6th) and finals (March 7th). Wednesday’s UNK/Pittsburg State winner will play either tourney’s 2nd seed Central Missouri, or the 7th seed Washburn on Friday at a time to be determined.

Four Lopers will be competing at the 2021 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships in Birmingham, Alabama. They are senior Tiara Schmidt, junior Seth Simonson, sophomore Brayden Sorensen and redshirt freshman Wes Ferguson. Due to the on-going pandemic the meet will last three days (March 11-13) with the overall field being reduced by 25 percent (270 to 202 participants). All D2 winter sport championships faced a reduction in qualifiers/teams this year based on the pandemic.

Husker senior outfielder Tristen Edwards was named the first Big Ten Player of the Week for a conference tieing record sixth time in her career Tuesday. During the Huskers opening weekend in Florida, Edwards batted .444 in six games with one double, three homers and six RBIs. The Husker softball team is off this weekend before returning to Florida in two weeks for a pair of three-game series against No. 17 Michigan and Purdue

Ryan Bauer has been named the head coach of the Kearney High wrestling team. A Kearney High grad, Bauer has been the physical education teacher and Head Wrestling Coach at Lincoln Southeast High School since 2018. Bauer was part of the UNK wrestling team from 2011-2016 and was on two National Championship Teams (2012, 2013), and was also a 4x Academic All-American. He replaces Ty Swarm, who resigned to become the KHS Assistant Principal. Bauer is the son of Marc Bauer, UNK Athletic Director.

The Tri-City Storm’s Connor Hopkins has been named the USHL’s “Goaltender of the Week”. It’s the first league honor in his career. Hopkins appeared in both of the Storm’s wins at the Viaero Center this past weekend. Hopkins made eleven saves on twelve shots in just over six minutes of game time in relief of Todd Scott in Saturday’s 3-1 win over the Fargo Force. On Sunday, Hopkins turned away twenty-three of Sioux City’s twenty-four shots on net to record his seventh victory of the season. The Storm are wrapping up an 8-game homestand with three games this weekend.
