KGFW Sports – Huskers Thumped, Baseball Begins and Girls State Tourney

The Husker men’s basketball team was dominated by 5th ranked Iowa last night in Iowa City, 102-64. The loss snapped the Huskers’ two game winning streak. This was their 13th game in the span of 27 days. The Husker men close out their regular season schedule Sunday at Northwestern. Tipoff in Evanston is at 12:30.

The Husker women are closing out their regular season schedule tomorrow night at Iowa. In their first meeting in Lincoln, the Hawkeyes topped the Huskers, 88-81. The Huskers and Hawkeyes tipoff tomorrow night at 7:00.

– The Big Ten will allow limited fan attendance at next week’s men’s and women’s basketball tournaments.

14th ranked Creighton is closing out their regular season schedule tomorrow afternoon. The Bluejays, who have lost two-in-a-row, are hosting the Butler Bulldogs. Creighton needed overtime to beat the Bulldogs earlier this season in Indy. Tipoff at the CHI Health Center is set for tomorrow afternoon at 4:00.

The Creighton women will take on Georgetown in the final game of the opening round of the Big East Tournament today at 4:00. The 6th-seeded Bluejays swept both games from Georgetown this season. The winning team will advance to face the 3rd seed Seton Hall Saturday night.

The 4th ranked Nebraska volleyball team returns to action this weekend at Illinois. The Huskers’ matches at Wisconsin last week had to be cancelled due to a COVID outbreak in the Badgers program. The Fighting Illini were idle as well last week, as their opponent Michigan State had to cancel because of COVID related issues. Currently 4th in the conference standings at 7-1, the Huskers lead the Big Ten in kills and assists per set, and are second in service aces. The Fighting Illini began the season with two wins at Iowa but since then have lost six in a row to top-ranked Wisconsin, 10th ranked Penn State and 19th ranked Ohio State. First serve for the Huskers and Fighting Illini is set for tonight at 8:00, and tomorrow night at 6:00.

The 23rd ranked Creighton volleyball team is back in action this weekend, following a 27-day COVID induced pause. The Bluejays host the Depaul Blue Demons both today and tonight. Both matches will take place inside D.J. Sokol Arena and start at 11:00 a.m.

The Big Ten Conference released their preseason Baseball Players to Watch list and preseason coaches’ poll yesterday. Senior Chance Hroch as well as juniors Cade Povich and Spencer Schwellenbach represented Nebraska on the list. Nebraska was not one of the top six teams listed in the preseason coaches’ poll. The Huskers are scheduled to open the season this afternoon in Round Rock, Texas, with the first of four games against the Purdue Boilermakers. First pitch is set for 3:00.

The Creighton baseball team takes on their crosstown rivals Nebraska-Omaha this afternoon at UNO’s new baseball facility, Tal Anderson Field. First pitch is at 3:00.

The UNK women’s basketball team will be in Hays, Kansas this weekend for the MIAA Tournament. The tourney’s 3rd seed, Lopers will face the 7th seed Washburn in the semi-finals tomorrow afternoon at 4:00. The Ichabods got an upset win over the 2nd seed Central Missouri in Warrensburg, 63-55. The tourney’s other semi-final Saturday features the top seed Fort Hays State and the 4th seed Emporia State. The MIAA Championship Game will be played Sunday in Hays.

The Tri-City Storm are wrapping up an 8-game homestand with three games this weekend. They host Waterloo tonight and tomorrow night at 7:05. They close out the weekend with a game against Sioux City Sunday afternoon at 4:05.
