KGFW Sports – B1G Tourneys Begin, David Signs and Boys Tourney Update

Mar 10, 2021 | 5:41 AM

The Big Ten revealed their post season honors for men’s basketball Tuesday. Husker senior Thorir Thorbjarnarson was Nebraska’s nominee for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award while Teddy Allen (who is no longer with the program) was an honorable-mention All-Big Ten selection by the conference media.

The Nebraska basketball teams are in Indy today for the start of the Big Ten Tournament. The men are playing at Lucas Oil Stadium, the women’s tourney is being played at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The Husker men are the 14th seed and take on the 11th seed Penn State tonight at approximately 7:45. The two teams split during the regular season. The winner will play the 6th seed Wisconsin tomorrow night. The Husker women are the 8th seed and play the 9th seed seed Minnesota this morning at 10:00. The Gophers topped the Huskers twice during the regular season. Today’s winner takes on the top seed Maryland tomorrow morning at 10:00.

Husker wrestler Liam Cronin has earned an at-large bid to next week’s 2021 NCAA Championships in St. Louis, Missouri. That means nine Huskers will have the opportunity to wrestle for a national championship. Eight Huskers secured automatic bids with their respective finishes at last weekend’s Big Ten Championships. Nebraska has qualified at least eight wrestlers for the NCAA Championships for the past three seasons and six times in the last ten seasons. Brackets and seeding for the NCAA Championships will be announced today at 5:00.

Former Husker linebacker Lavonte David has reportedly signed a two-year extension with the defending Super Bowl Champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers that will pay him $25 million. David was set to become a free agent this offseason, but will rejoin a Bucs defense that was among the best in the league last season. The 31-year-old David has averaged 114 tackles per season in his nine-year career.

The UNK softball team saw their six game winning streak come to an end yesterday in their MIAA opener at Lincoln University. The Blue Tigers took game one of their double-header 6-5, but the Lopers bounced back in game two with a 10-1 win in five innings. The Lopers continue on the road today with a double-header at Central Missouri starting at 1:00.
