KGFW Sports – Jay Dance to Sweet 16, Sun Honored, NU NFL Pro-Day and More

Mar 23, 2021 | 5:48 AM

The 19th-ranked and fifth-seeded Creighton men’s basketball team earned their first trip to the Sweet 16 with a 72-58 victory over 13th-seeded Ohio last night in Indy. The Bluejays will face top-ranked and unbeaten Gonzaga Sunday, with the winner advancing to the Elite Eight. Creighton is 6-4 all-time against the Bulldogs.

Six of the top eleven teams in the latest AVCA Top 25-Poll are from the Big Ten. Despite the fact that they have been idle three straight weeks, Wisconsin is still No. 1 in the nation, followed by Texas, Kentucky, Minnesota is 4th and Nebraska is holding steady at No. 5. Ohio State is ranked 9th, Purdue is 10th and Penn State is 11th. Creighton has dropped out of the poll. The Huskers travel to Michigan this week for matches both Thursday and Friday.

Husker senior outside hitter Lexi Sun has been named Big Ten Player of the Week for the second time this season. Sun posted 4.33 kills per set with a .408 hitting percentage in two sweeps over Iowa last week. Sun earned her first Big Ten Player of the Week honor three weeks ago. For the season, she leads the Huskers in kills at 3.98 per set and aces (16).

Several former Huskers will get the chance to make their case for NFL teams, as the program will hold its annual Pro Day event today. The list of former Huskers trying to impress the NFL scouts includes Dicaprio Bootle, Matt Farniok, Brenden Jaimes, Dedrick Mills, and Jack Stol.

In recruiting news: Georgia defensive back Sutton Smith has the Huskers in his top two.
