KGFW Sports – B1G Welcoming Back Fans, Husker Face Mich and High School Update

Mar 25, 2021 | 8:44 AM

The Big Ten Conference will allow fans to return to regular-season conference sporting events beginning immediately. The decision to follow local health guidelines and restrictions was made jointly by Big Ten Conference Athletic Directors and the Council of Presidents and Chancellors in consultation with university medical experts and the conference office. The decision applies to all remaining events in Nebraska’s home athletic venues, which includes baseball, softball, soccer, volleyball and the Husker football teams’ May 1st spring game. The Big Ten announced earlier this month that they would allow fans to attend conference championship events, including the Big Ten Men’s Gymnastics and Tennis championships that will be held in Lincoln in April.

Cam Chick has been named Big Ten Baseball Player of the Week. The junior infielder broke out of an early-season slump in the final two games of the series at Iowa, going 4-8 with two home runs, two doubles and nine RBIs. This is his first Big Ten Player of the Week honor. After playing 11 straight games away from Lincoln to start the season the Nebraska baseball team’s home opener is this weekend. The Huskers will take on the Minnesota Golden Gophers in game one of a four-game series Friday at Hawks Field. First pitch will be at 2:00.

The 5th ranked Nebraska volleyball team will be in Ann Arbor tonight for the first of two matches with the Michigan Wolverines. The Huskers swept their matches with Iowa last week, improving to 12-2 on the season. The Huskers are second in the conference in hitting percentage (.270), kills per set (14.18) and opponent hitting percentage (.162). The Wolverines, who dropped a pair of matches at Ohio State last week to falll to 4-5 on the season, leads the Big Ten in assists per set and kills per set. First serve tonight is at 7:00.

The UNK volleyball team has moved up one spot, to No. 11 in the latest AVCA Division II Top-25 Poll. Other MIAA teams in the rankings include Washburn (Tied 14th), Northwest Missouri State at No. 18 and Central Missouri at No. 24. The 11th ranked Lopers will be in Topeka, Kansas Saturday for matches against Missouri Southern and 24th ranked Central Missouri.

Former Husker defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh has finalized a one-year, $9 million deal to stay with the Super Bowl Champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This will be his 12th season in the NFL. He recorded 43 tackles and six sacks for the Bucs last season while playing in all 16 regular-season games. This is the fourth straight season that Suh has played on a one-year contract. The arrangements have worked well for him, considering he started with a $14 million deal in Los Angeles and has hovered between $8 million and $9.25 million each of the past two seasons in Tampa.

Also on Wednesday, the Minnesota Vikings announced that they have re-signed former Nebraska running back Ameer Abdullah. The terms of the deal were not available. Abdullah appeared in all 16 games for the Vikings in 2020, though he only carried the ball eight times and had eight catches. Abdullah has been with the Vikings since 2018 and before that played three seasons with the Detroit Lions.
