KGFW Sports – Huskers Top Much, Baseball and Softball at Home, UNK Wrestling Honors and More

The 5th ranked Nebraska volleyball team had to rally to get past Michigan last night in Ann Arbor. The Wolverines took set one 25-19, but the Huskers won the next three, winning 25-16, 25-15, 25-20. The Husker and Wolverines are back in action tonight, first serve is at 6:00.

After opening the season with 11 straight road games, the Nebraska baseball team is at Hawks Field this weekend with a four game series with Minnesota. The Huskers are coming off a series win at Iowa. They were shutout in the opener, 3-0, but scored 23 runs over the final two games to win the series. Minnesota opened their season with 11 straight games at home. First pitch for game one of the four game series at Hawks Field is this afternoon at 2:00. The two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow at Noon. The four game series is scheduled to wrap up Sunday at Noon.

The Nebraska softball team will play at Bowlin Stadium for the first time in nearly two years when they face Penn State in a four-game series this weekend. This is the Huskers first home game in 698 days. The last time they played at Bowlin Stadium was against Maryland on April 28, 2019. The Huskers and Nittany Lions will play a single game today at 5:30, followed by a doubleheader on Saturday at Noon and the series finale on Sunday at 11:00.

The 11th ranked UNK volleyball team will be in Topeka, Kansas tomorrow for matches against Missouri Southern and 24th ranked Central Missouri. The Lopers will close out a three match road swing at Fort Hays next Thursday. Their final home match of the abbreviated spring schedule is a week from tomorrow when they host Washburn.

The UNK/Northeastern (Colo.) Junior College women’s soccer game set for tomorrow at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium has been canceled due to COVID protocols within the NJC program. The Lopers have three home dates coming up in April. The Lopers travel to Wichita, Kansas next Thursday to officially begin MIAA play. So far this spring the Lopers have lost to Missouri Western State, 4-3 in OT, and at Fort Hays State, 4-0, in “non-conference” games.

The MIAA announced its 2020-21 Wrestling postseason awards Thursday. UNK’s Joseph Reimers earned Freshman of the Year accolades and Dalton Jensen was named the Coach of the Year. Reimers becomes the third Loper to win MIAA Freshman of the Year honors in the last six years, joining Zach Stodden (2016) and Matt Malcom (2018). In the 197-pound weight class, Reimers finished in fourth-place at the championships to earn All-America status. Jensen now has been named MIAA Coach of the Year three times (2018, 2019, 2021). He led the Lopers to a second-place showing at the NCAA National Championships, the sixth overall national runner-up finish in school history.

Former Loper Tervel Dlagnev has been named the head coach of the Nebraska Wrestling Training Center. An Olympic bronze medalist and two-time NCAA Division II champion at UNK, Dlagnev will take over an Olympic training program known for world-class athletes Jordan Burroughs and James Green.

The UNK softball team is in Kansas this weekend. The Lopers have a doubleheader at Emporia State this afternoon, and Washburn tomorrow afternoon. The Lopers home opener is next Friday when they host Missouri Southern.

The Tri-City Storm are closing out a four game homestand tonight when they host the Omaha Lancers. The puck drops tonight at 7:05. The Storm were scheduled to open a six game road swing tomorrow night in Des Moines, but that game has been postponed. They will be in Iowa Sunday for a game against Sioux City.
